Ask The Oral Surgery Group: Do I Really Need My Wisdom Teeth Removed?

added on: July 9, 2021
wisdom teeth

Even though their name suggests that they bring you more knowledge, wisdom teeth are generally known for causing another reaction in patients: pain and/or discomfort. According to the American Dental Association, these teeth were given their name because they tend to appear at a more mature age — usually between the ages of 17 and 21. (In some cases, kids as young as 12 or 13 develop their wisdom teeth!)

The Oral Surgery Group will be the first to tell you that wisdom teeth are one, if not the biggest, reason why patients from Bucks, Montgomery, and Philadelphia counties are calling our offices every day. They want them removed and to be out of pain.

Why Wisdom Teeth Removal is Highly Recommended

Generally speaking, anyone who doesn’t have enough room in their mouth for wisdom teeth to fully make their way through their gum should consider having them removed. But how do you know when it’s the right time to move forward with wisdom teeth extraction? First, you should schedule a consultation with The Oral Surgery Group or get a referral from your general dentist to come and see our team. Ideally, we want to remove your wisdom teeth before the root structure is fully developed and before you reach age 30 when problems tend to emerge with increasing frequency.

What Happens If I Wait?

If you wait to get your wisdom teeth extracted, there’s a chance you’ll experience issues as you grow older. Not getting the help you or your child needs early enough can lead to more unwanted and costly dental problems in the future, and we want to help you avoid that. Other side effects of putting off your wisdom teeth extraction can include:

  • Pain and Infection
  • Gum disease and tooth decay
  • Cysts and tumors
  • Damage to neighboring teeth

These are all things you want to avoid to keep your oral and overall health in check.
